New challenges for YouTube stars

Two weeks ago promised the world's most popular YouTube star, that in order to fight against changes in the YouTube algorithm that have significantly reduced the views of his videos, he will delete his channel when it reaches 50 million subscribers.

The video quickly got over 20 million views and at a faster pace than before, the channel reached 50 million subscribers a few days ago. Of course, it was a joke, or the star deleted one of his other channels, but the topic remained in the air in the video world.

A drop in video views?

Stars complain that YouTube's algorithm change has made a big difference related i.e. the display of recommended videos, is the main reason why the views of these videos drop.

There are several theories as to the reason, but one of the most watertight is by “Game Theory”:

Thoughts on the video:

  1. YouTube wants to offer more and more fresh content, so you have to stay relevant make a new video every day!
  2. More frequent content creation reduces quality, except for large corporations pushing YouTube, who have significantly more video capacity. On channels producing factual content (CGP Grey, V-Sauce, Veritasum and others), who spend most of the video creation researching the topic, it will be increasingly difficult to stay in the picture.
  3. Watch time is still important, but not in terms of percentage anymore, but YouTube counts viewing minutes. So, longer videos have advantages - watching a 50% or 10 minutes of a 20 minute video is better for the channel and YouTube than a 100% watching a 3 minute clip.
  4. You have to get used to that YouTube changes over time. On different ones estimates even up to 33% per year. The quality, search system, design, etc. will change. The recommendations that apply today may not be the same in a few months.

In summary, Game Theory has highlighted several important points based on statistical data that anyone using YouTube as a marketing channel should know.
